We are a community workshop that aims to combat social isolation and create an atmosphere of mutual support.
We are located on Low Lane, Horsforth LS18 5QW in the grounds of St James Woodside church.
We provide an inclusive, welcoming environment for men and women from a variety of backgrounds. We particularly focus on supporting people who are experiencing social isolation, anxiety, depression and dementia. We also offer specific sessions to young people attending specialist provision for autism and pupils in alternative educational provision. The Shed is accessible for wheelchair users.
We are currently open four days a week (Tuesday to Friday). Some of our sessions are reserved for specific groups with regular bookings but we also run drop-in sessions for adults on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1pm.
All sessions start with a short time of meeting and greeting in the designated social area, enabling people to get to know each other over a drink and a biscuit. Our workshop is well-equipped with a full range of woodworking machinery and hand tools. Participants are encouraged to work on a project of their choice and will be supported by our team of experienced Shed Supervisors, many of whom are former Design & Technology teachers.
Fees for accessing the Shed are agreed on an annual basis with the organisations who have regular bookings. For the drop-in sessions we operate on a “pay as you’re able basis” to reduce barriers to access.
Attending the Horsforth Shed positively impacts mental health by fostering social connections, providing a sense of purpose through collaborative projects, and offering a supportive environment for open communication. Engaging in creative, practical activities promotes stress reduction, emotional expression and cognitive well-being. The camaraderie creates a strong support network and sense of belonging, reducing feelings of isolation. Woodworking and creative activities also promote physical movement, enhance coordination, and contribute to overall well-being. Regular participation in Horsforth Shed activities fosters an active lifestyle, reducing sedentary behaviour and associated health risks.
